  • Ivan Lendl Retires From `Game I Love' ; Indomitable Will Defeated by Back Condition

Ivan Lendl, once the most physically fit man in tennis, announced his retirement from the game yesterday because of a back condition. "This is a very difficult and sad time for me," 34-year-old Lendl, who is currently ranked No. 54 on the ATP Tour, said yesterday on a teleconference call. "This is not the way I would have chosen to retire and I'm sure I will miss the game I love." Doctors diagnosed Lendl's problem as facet joint syndrome, a degenerative spinal condition, in February and he has been receiving treatments all year. Last week, however, doctors told him that there was no hope of recovery and that the pain would only worsen if he continued to play tennis. … More >> The Washington Post (Wed, 21 Dec 1994)

Byline: Patrick COLLINS PS IVAN LENDL cut a doleful figure on the tennis court. The hooded eyes, the lugubrious stare, the Middle European air of dark introspection; imagine Hannibal Lecter with a tightly strung Slazenger and you have the picture. Andy Murray is monosyllabic, surly and occasionally given to … More >> The Mail on Sunday (London, England) (Sun, 15 Jan 2012)

  • Andy's Win Was So Good Ivan Lendl Almost Smiled

Byline: Tam Cowan TYPICAL. After waiting 76 years for a British tennis player to claim a Grand Slam title, Andy Murray wins the US Open when we're all in our scratcher. The final finished at the back of two in the morning and, let's face it, the only Scot you normally watch on the box at that time is Tom Weir. At four hours and 54 minutes, Murray won the joint-longest US Open final in history. I love my football but the next time I hear a player or manager whingeing about playing two games in a week, I think I'll give him a slap. Forget tennis elbow, the Scots who stayed up were suffering from a new condition - tennis eyelids. … More >> Daily Record (Glasgow, Scotland) (Wed, 12 Sep 2012)

The Scot appointed Lendl as his new coach at the end of last year and has been working alongside the eight-time major winner ahead of the Australian Open which gets under way tomorrow. • Every Day, Yet Not Every Way, It's a Brand New Ivan Lendl

Ivan Lendl smiled and laughed and joked with the crowd at Rock Creek Tennis Center yesterday afternoon, but, as he stalled for time, he was also clearly perplexed. What should he do? Was he going to make himself look like an ogre again? These have always been the nasty little moments for Lendl, when he has to chose between expressing his humanity and hitting a perfect shot. Across the net from him was Greg Yocum, a sophomore tennis player at Shippensburg (Pa.) University. The youngster, a miniature ringer for Lendl, right down to his haircut and outfit, was part of a network TV stunt. Live Out a Fantasy. Pretend you lead the No. 1 player in the world, 5-0, in a fifth-set tie … More >> The Washington Post (Wed, 29 Jul 1987)
  • This tournament always represents the start of the sporting year. It's the first really big event of 2012 and there appear to be more talking points than usual. This tournament always represents the start of the sporting year. It's the first really big event of 2012 and there appear to be more talking points than usual. The men's side is as always intriguing; has Federer still got it? What about Nadal? And how will Murray's partnership with Ivan Lendl impact his game? Then there is the defending champion Novak Djokovic, who had that extraordinary 2011. Can he back it up this year? If he does he truly deserves to be talked about as one of the greats. 'The Fed' and Rafa are in action today as is South Africa's No1 Kevin Anderson who will play against Denmark's Frederick Nielsen. • Ivan Lendl - just another wild, crazy American

NEW YORK Never thought it could happen. Here I was, laughing so hard I wiped a tear from my eye, laughing at a story told by Ivan Lendl! He had just whipped Henri Leconte in four sets to reach the semifinals in defense of his U.S. Open tennis championship and he was entertaining a room full of reporters with lively commentary, spiced with humor. The talk turned to the difficulty of winning before foreign crowds. You haven't seen a tough crowd, Ivan was saying, until you've been on the visiting team for a Davis Cup match in Paraguay, as he had when playing for Czechoslovakia. Any ball a Paraguayan hits within three feet of the line is good, Ivan was … More >> Chicago Sun-Times (Thu, 04 Sep 1986)
