High fuel prices to hit rodeo SPRINGFIELD -- Fewer exhibitors plan to participate in the National High School Finals Rodeo trade show this summer because they say rising gasoline prices will slash their profits. That could mean a $70,000 loss for the rodeo, organizers said. The trade show, known as the Western Mall, will be housed in just one building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds during the event, July 23-29. Last year, Western Mall exhibitors selling everything from cowboy hats to belt buckles spread between two buildings, said Jeff Dillman, executive director of OAT Inc., which runs the rodeo. "Exhibitors are telling us that gas prices are too high for them to travel from out west to Springfield," said Dillman. "They're all convinced gas prices are going to be $3." But high gas prices won't keep rodeo competitors away, said Mitch Miller, marketing director for the National High School Rodeo Association. He said many contestants will come to the competition from a youth rodeo in Oklahoma. "Since they are more than half of the way to Springfield already, my guess is that they will continue on," Miller said. "I wouldn't be surprised if we ... exceed last year's contestant numbers." Dillman has been blanketing the Midwest with advertising in the hopes of drawing bigger crowds than last year. "People may not be taking a big vacation because of high gas prices, but they can come and see this and have a great time," he said.
