  • Fatal shot `compatible with suicide'.

by Jarrod Booker South Island correspondent A pathology expert has described the gunshot that killed Robin Bain as perfectly compatible with suicide, and refused to place weight on statistics on how suicide is carried out. Victorian pathology professor Stephen Cordner also told the High Court in Christchurch yesterday that Laniet Bain may have survived long enough after being shot three times to be heard gurgling. Dr Cordner gave evidence on a video link from Melbourne for the defence of David Bain, 37, who is on trial for the murder of his parents and three siblings in their Dunedin home on June 20, 1994. Bain's defence team says his father Robin, 58, shot dead the family and then … More >> New Zealand Herald (Auckland, New Zealand) (Tue, 26 May 2009)
  • Australia IDs bones of robber/folk hero Ned Kelly

SYDNEY (AP) — The headless remains of Australia's most storied criminal, Ned Kelly, have been identified, officials said Thursday, ending a decades-long mystery surrounding the final resting place of a man now seen by many as a folk hero.Kelly, who led a gang of bank robbers in Australia's southern Victoria state in the 19th century, was hanged in 1880. His corpse's fate was unknown, though it was long suspected his body lay alongside 33 other executed inmates in a mass grave at a prison.Officials pinpointed the location of the grave site in 2008 and later exhumed the bodies for analysis. A DNA sample from one of Kelly's descendants confirmed that one of the skeletons — … More >> AP Online (Wed, 31 Aug 2011)
  • Burnt off the map.(News)

Survivors made a heart-rending return to a town burnt to ashes in Australia's deadliest bushfires, as police scoured the crime scene in their hunt for suspected arsonists. With one in five of the town's original 500 residents feared dead, police counsellors were aboard the buses that took the traumatised survivors back to Marysville, north-east of Melbourne, for the first time since the inferno. "It was a very emotional and traumatic time for these residents seeing their gutted houses and knowing that friends and neighbours died," said Stuart Ord of the Victoria state Department of Sustainability and Environment. Marysville residents said before the … More >> Sunday Tribune (South Africa) (Sun, 15 Feb 2009)

  • Men's Hockey: Coaches Look for League Stalemate

Byline: JOHN FLACK COOKSTOWN coach Fergie Cosgrove makes no bones about the fact he would be delighted with a draw against Annadale in today's crucial Harp Lager Senior League clash at the local High School. His opposite number Ronnie Smyth would be equally happy as such a result would guarantee both contestants a place in the All Ireland play-offs. Lisnagarvey are already confirmed as champions meaning the two remaining places are up for grabs. As fate would have it, a point apiece would be just the ticket for Cookstown and Annadale to enable them to join the Lisburn team in the All Ireland series. • Pupils get chance to take flight.(Business)

ANDREW Smyth, a pupil at Sullivan Upper School in Holywood, recently discovered what it takes to be a pilot, thanks to a competition run by British Airways and Bombardier Aerospace. Andrew was one of five lucky Northern Ireland children to win a British Airways Bombardier pilot training day at London Heathrow. The budding aviators beat off stiff competition from hundreds of pupils across the Province to earn the chance of taking control of a flight simulator under the command of a British Airways captain. The competition, developed to show children how technology is used in aerospace, from aircraft design to flight training, involved children from … More >> The News Letter (Belfast, Northern Ireland) (Tue, 20 Dec 2005)
